The most common type of people to use small talk are those who do not know each other at all. It is also common for people who are only acquaintances, often called a "friend of a friend", to use small talk.

Most often, small talk occurs in places where people are waiting for something. It is called "mingling" when people walk around in a social setting and talk to a variety of people.
