176. Holidays honor people or events. If you could create a new holiday, what person or event would it honor and how would you want people to celebrate it? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. 

We have many holidays which honor people or event, such as Mar. 8th is International Woman’s Day, Feb. 14th is St. Valentine’s Day, Dec. 1st is World AIDS Day and so on. If I could create a new holiday, I would give this honor to Yao Ming, a Chinese basketball player, who is now in Houston Rocket. In the following discussion, I would like to reason and provide evidence to support my opinion.

The most important reason that I will first provide is that Yao Ming is modest. Yao Ming, who is the richest athlete in China, is kind to everyone, especially to fans. Most athletes in China who earn less than Yao Ming look down upon average people, even refuse to sign to fans. But Yao Ming doesn’t refuse anything what fans want. One of my co-workers met Yao Ming in Shanghai last year, she wanted to take a picture with him but she worried that Yao would refuse it. Unexpectedly, Yao agreed quickly and gladly. Yao Ming is also generous and righteous. Last year there was a terrible disease “SARS” in China, Yao was in America that time. But when he heard this awful event, he donated 500,000 RMB to China as disease fund. Don’t you think we will create a new holiday to honor him?

Another head and chief important reason that I have chosen to put here is that Yao Ming loves his country China, although he plays basketball in America. There is nothing more important than loving motherland, especially to who are not in their own countries. If there was an important basketball games competing between China and other countries which needed Yao Ming to join. He never refused and back to China as soon as possible even though he had to give up attending NBA games which could bring him high reputation and considerable earning. As a famous athlete, he believes that the benefit of nation is much higher than that of individual. Isn’t he a national hero in China?

Last but not the least reason is that Yao Ming studies English very hard although he has enough money to hire a permanent English interpreter. At the beginning, when he came to America, he knew little English so that he couldn‘t communicate with his coach and teammates if there was not an interpreter. But now, less than 2 years, his English improved quickly. His interpreter even worried that he would lose his job. Don’t you think that Yao Ming is our model who impulses us to study harder.

To sum up, given all the reasons discussed above. I believe you must make the same choice like me. Why don’t we create a holiday to celebrate this outstanding and excellent athlete, Yao Ming.
