　　evolve 发展，进化 v. (cause to) develop naturally and (usu) gradually

　　【词源解析】e-强调，volv=roll，turn，表示“卷，转”。volume，意思是书籍的“卷”，卷者，转也，也就是通过“转”把平面的书变成圆轴状以便于携带。在纸发明以前，古代中国的书是竹简或帛，西方则是用莎草或羊皮，只有卷起来才能方便携带。书是人卷起来的，人有时会有意无意卷到某些事里面去，这个卷入，英语就叫 involve，in 咱们很熟悉，是“进入”的意思，旋转进去了，就是“卷入”。除了具体的转之外，还有一些抽象的转，也可以用 vol-，如革命 revolution。人类社会和生物界，也不都是要通过革命的方式才能进步，可以不用翻个儿，一步步适应环境，朝前走。这种一步步适应环境朝前走的方式，叫进化，是达尔文发现的，他管这种方式叫 evolution，即进化论。e=out 也许他认为生物就是靠各种方式“转生”“出来”的。有些人健谈，口若悬河，滔滔不绝，在英国人看来，这种人舌头“转”得很快，所以，他们称这种人叫 voluble，“流畅的”。词根 vert-也是表示“转”的意思，我们来看 introvert 和 extrovert 这两个单词。intro-是拉丁语里很常用的前缀，表示“向内的”，所以 intro-+vert 意思就是“向内转动”，引申一下就是思想等不断地向内转动，也就是“内向”的意思了;同样的道理，如果向外(extro-)转动，就是性格外向的人啦。
